The new documentary in Netflix “The Social dilemma” is the current talk apart from IPL at the moment. This documentary covers experts who have worked in “social media” and believe it is being used in the wrong sense. Here I will be covering few of the main points and give my opinion as well.

Many of us believe that social media is just a place where you see what your friends do and share your pictures. That is not the entire idea or intent of social media at least at present. All social media have thousands of servers processing all your activities including how long you look at a post. Accordingly it recommends you the next image or meme or videos.

The only goal or reason of the social media still exists is to persuade you indirectly to check how much of your life will you give them. People believe that AI is yet to come but, AI runs the social media to keep your attention always towards the phone starring at new feed. I know many people won’t believe this think about this: why doesn’t everyone have the same feed when they open social media?

The AI sets rabbit holes and when you fall into one of them you end up scrolling without recognizing the lost time. The reason why they do this is to advertise products in between the scrolling. Especially when its election times and the campaign is taken place through social media which is the new fashion the AI tries to make the user watch the campaign video when you go through random posts.

The quote “if you are not paying for the product then you are the product” suits perfectly for social media. You are the product refers to your data, the photos you post, the posts you see everything you do on social media.

To conclude the technology that connects us controls us.
